Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"We loved the place, the food was so delicious and well prepared, service was quick and attentive and the concept is great. You order the meat at the display fridge at the entrance and the sids at the table. It was so good that we returned for a second time, the next day."
"We liked the concept of this restaurant. Food was good as well. Concept: Sit down, reserve the table, order drinks/aperitivo and then go to the counter and choose your meat you want to eat. Prices are in €/100gr.. Meat was well prepared and seems to be local meat from farmers around the area. Plenty of space to sit down (May), will definitely be too full in August so come early (7pm). Situated directly at the main square."
"This was the highlight of my husband’s vacation; it is literally one of the first things he tells people about. We had lunch here and despite knowing next to nothing about the food or how the service works, we were helped to enjoy a satisfying meal. We had a selection of bombette and sides of potatoes and grilled vegetables. I particularly enjoyed the grilled vegetables because I had not eaten many vegetables during my trip. I’d say if I had to have a complaint, one was that the sides came after the meat (maybe that’s how it’s done? No idea!) and another was that the seating was very snug (my back was right up against the diner behind me), but I would place both of those more in “nice to know” category, not a reason not to go."
"We loved this place! It’s an experience! Please note that there is a long waiting time but us totally worth it. Great quality meat, friendly service and cheap! Eat the bombette, try them all!"
"Nice little restaurant where you get to choose your meat and then they would cook it for you and take it to the table. Reasonable prices for the location. Service was on point, not much variety of meet. All in all a good difference lunch experience with the family"
"Wonderful meal in a traditional Fornello in Cisternino. Food and wine were excellent and the experience of choosing your meat from the 'butchers counter' was quite unique. We were fortunate to get there early as the place filled up very quickly and people were queueing waiting for a table - and I can understand why. Would definitely recommend a meal at Al Vecchio Fornello."
"I don't get why others gave a low star rating. Food is simply amazing: excellent meat excellently cooked. Gnumariddi are crunchy and inside soft. Very tasty. Wine, water, potatoes, we ate outside in a very inspiring street Bére Vecchia (Old Bari) and we spent 15€/each. What else? Well done guys, it was a pleasure to be your guests PS: the house wine is taken from old big jar, the Capasone. Lovely"
"Unique experience eating in a “butcher shop”. The experience is worth it and the food is good but not stellar (these are good cut of meat but they are served without much seasoning). Also we were lucky to eat inside by the counter and could see a lot of the action and had fast service but unless you are outside, the room where most people are is very loud, with low ceilings and felt like a less pleasant place to be."
